I have yet to see a reporter state efficiency correctly. While I have reviewed multiple SAE papers, getting equal mileage from E85 and gasoline will be difficult. Octane does matter for higher efficiency and when compared to 87 octane gasoline ethanol can get very close.

What needs to be understood is that if ethanol is volumetrically equal to gasoline then the ethanol engine is 30 percent more efficiency with ethanol and offers 33 percent less carbon per mile. Energy in to work out, the average drive cycle in cars today see an average of our cars today

Ethanol is evaluated to produce not on a gallon but on a unit of energy, one mega jewel of energy which is 948 btu's. When you look at the carbon and energy to produce this unit of ethanol over gasoline and the efficiency increases that are possible, this offers a 60 percent + reduction to carbon and over twice as efficient then gasoline to produce and use.
