“It’s better for the Earth and it’s about the same price as regular diesel–why not?”

Located in Lincoln, California, Nor Cal Pool Productions specializes in the design and construction of custom pool and patio installations.

Kenmore, WA – Bothell Way Clean Fuel Point – Tuesday, May 5th

brick_kenmore

We ran into Brick today at our Kenmore, Washington pump on  Bothell Way located at the very north end of Lake Washington. Brick has been fueling his Jeep Liberty CRD with Propel for 2 years.

The limited release Liberty “CRD” (2005 – 2006) stands for “Common Rail Diesel,” describing the 4-cylinder 2.8 liter turbo-diesel engine. CRD systems use high injection pressure to move fuel into the combustion chamber, resulting in higher fuel economy and cleaner burning diesel.

Brick also fuels his Chevy Duramax Diesel pickup with Propel, in both downtown Seattle and here in Kenmore.

Rocklin, CA – Rocklin Clean Fuel Point – Thursday, April 23rd
bud_filling1

Bud is hoping for a Propel station in Nevada County, but until then, he’s happy to fill his Ford F-250 with biodiesel in Rocklin.

“People have told me that it runs more quietly now that I’ve been using biodiesel — less knocks,” says Bud.

Biodiesel does enhance engine lubricity, making diesel engines run more smoothly. Many drivers testify to a smoother, quieter ride with biodiesel fuel.

Rocklin, CA – Rocklin Clean Fuel Point – Tuesday, April 7th

Met Linda this afternoon at the Rocklin pump. She regularly makes her way down from Penryn to fill up her Flex Fuel Tahoe and has been using the Rocklin Clean Fuel Point since the fuel started flowing early this year. She’s excited to have access to E85 closer to home. In fact, she has happily shown three new customers the ins-and-outs of using the Propel location.

Seattle, WA – South Lake Union Station – Friday, March 27th stumptown11

On this gray Friday in Seattle I ran into Zach Fogel with Stumptown Coffee Roasters at the downtown SLU station. As a direct trade coffee roaster that prides itself on knowing its growers and its roasting artistry, Stumptown was happy to find a fuel partner with shared values. stumptown2

Also, the canola was growing like crazy at the station garden, some yellow flowers beginning to pop. With such a long snowy NW winter, it shows how tough this winter crop is.

States Logistics’ fleet reduces harmful emissions with the use of biodiesel

stateslogistics

With seven diesel vehicles running on biodiesel blends, California-based company, States Logistics was able to reduce the fleet’s CO2 output by over 72 tons! Three vehicles ran on B99 while four ran on a B5 biodiesel blend. The company’s lifecycle carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction demonstration was facilitated by the National Biodiesel Board over a six month period.

“The B99 trucks (three-axle International model 8600) ran 48,198 miles and consumed 8,770 gallons over the six month period. The equivalent straight petroleum diesel output would have been 89.9 tons, but with B99, the output was 19.8 tons for a savings of 70.1 tons. The B5 fleet (two-axle flat bed) traveled 61,433 miles and consumed 7,090 gallons of B5. Equivalent petroleum CO2 output would have been 71.4, with B5 the output was reduced to 68.6 for 2.8 tons of CO2 reduction. In addition to CO2 reduction, an estimated 119 pounds of particulate matter were eliminated from the exhaust during the six month period. Carbon monoxide (CO) was reduced by over 500 pounds, hydrocarbons (HC) by over 50 pounds, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) by close to 40 pounds. ”

States Logistics looks forward to sharing the results of this demonstration with customers to show the positive impact of using biodiesel. Ryan Donovan, VP of Operations and Business Development of States Logistics, says, ”we all benefit from having this information available to show the efforts being made to reduce carbon footprint throughout the supply chain.”

Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy described the move as an “extraordinary change” for the retailer. In the Sunday Times, he denied Tesco was responding to external pressure to improve its public image.

Sir Terry said: “My aim has always been to be number one in the eyes of customers, not in anyone else’s eyes. This issue is growing in importance for customers and we have got to respond.”

The Emerging Biodiesel Driver Demographic

 biodiesel r320

R320 cdi clean-diesel (from mbusa.com)

Is there really a diesel passenger car market in the USA? Yes there is.
From the Diesel Technology Forum

New data from R.L. Polk & Company shows that annual registration of diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S. has grown 80 percent since 2000, from 301,000 vehicles to nearly 550,000 in 2005. 31 percent of this growth came in the past year alone. Most analysts expect the diesel trend to continue. Researchers at J.D. Power and Associates predict that diesel sales will approximately triple in the next 10 years, accounting for more than 10 percent of U.S. vehicle sales by 2015 up from 3.6 percent in 2005.

The emerging diesel driver demographic is very interesting- as the new passenger models will be leaning heavy on high end European models (BMW, Mercedes, VW) and luxury SUVs (Chrysler). Of course the vast majority of diesels are still business and gov’t fleet vehicles. What is the emerging biodiesel driver profile? Indeed: well educated, well paid, environmentally conscious (and/or patriotic) individuals, and gov’t and business fleets under increasing clean air mandates and shareholder pressures to clean up. These drivers are choosing diesel because of efficiency, lower total cost of ownership, and better environmental profile than gasoline. Using biodiesel dramatically improves these qualities. Our research hints that biodiesel is the main driver for passenger diesel sales (where biodiesel and diesel cars are both widely available).

Real People Using Biodiesel: Video Testimonials

Back in September of 2005, Propel asked our friend and filmmaker, Riley Morton, to interview biodiesel drivers at Laurelhurst Oil, the first Propel retail location. We talked with the typical wide range of biodiesers- individuals, small business owners, fleet drivers, a construction crew… only a few folks had time to film with us. To see more, visit the Propel site. (and note the old logo- we like our updated “bug” much better!)
